POUGHKEEPSIE – A 29-year-old City of Poughkeepsie man who was stabbed at mid-morning on Tuesday died while undergoing surgery, Poughkeepsie City Police said.

Officers were called to 41 Pershing Avenue near Pershing Avenue Park around 10:35 a.m.

Responding officers, firefighters from Poughkeepsie’s Engine 2, and Mobile Life medics responded to the scene and found the victim with serious wounds, according to Police Captain Richard Wilson.  The victim was treated for life-threatening wounds and transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital by Mobile Life Support Services, with CPR in progress.

A witness said that approximately 10 people were in or near the park at the time of the incident and most left before police arrived.

Detectives and uniformed officers closed Pershing Avenue between the westbound arterial and Mansion Street while they searched for evidence.  A resident of Pershing Avenue told Mid-Hudson News that at least one woman that was in the park may have recorded the incident on her cell phone.

Two women were seeking information about their brother who was said to be involved in the incident.

Two women responded to the scene and alerted an officer that they were told by someone that their brother may have been involved in the incident.  The women left the scene before speaking with a detective.

The park has recently undergone a revitalization by City of Poughkeepsie DPW workers who spent time removing debris and overgrowth, in an effort to make the park more “user-friendly.”

Individuals with information about the incident are asked to call 845-451-7577 or submit a tip online.
