MID-HUDSON – Perhaps it was because more people stayed home on July 4th; perhaps it was because municipalities did not host fireworks events because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, neighborhoods across the Hudson Valley were lit up by fireworks set off in backyards. Aside from being illegal, they are dangerous. That did not stop people from setting them off to the “ooh’s and aah’s” of kids of all ages.

Some kids took the safe way out and used light sticks to brighten their after dark Independence Day evening.

Lorelai, Emily and Cole enjoyed the evening with their glow sticks at their grandma’s house in the Town of Wallkill. That activity culminated a day with the young ladies making mac and cheese and cupcakes, all from scratch.

Still others continued to disregard the warning of health officials both locally and around the nation by not practicing social distancing.

At one gathering at a residence on Route 300 in the Town of Newburgh Saturday night, an estimated 300 people partied it up, prompting a police response.
