SUFFERN – A 33-year-old Suffern man drowned in the Ramapo River in Suffern early Thursday.

Suffern Police Chief Clark Osborn said two men were observed by a village employee frantically running along the riverbank in the area of the Suffern athletic fields.

The men told police officers that one of their brothers had gone swimming in the river in the morning and thought he had gone home.

When they came back to check the area several hours later they located his clothes and personal belongings on the riverbank.

Officers began searching on the river and located the man dead in several feet of water.

Due to the water depth and unsteady terrain they called in the Suffern Fire Department to assist. The Mahwah Fire Department assisted in the recovery along with Thiells and Stony Point, which provided drive and water recovery teams.
