NEWBURGH – Actor and environmentalist Mark Ruffalo, who calls Sullivan County home, has called on the environmental movement to be more inclusive.

Speaking on a forum conducted by the Riverkeeper organization on Tuesday evening, he said the environmental cause must be more representative of the population in the racial justice movement.

“I am asking the environmental movement, which is predominantly run by white people, to start to make places all the way up onto your boards, on to your advisory committees, to bring the people of color into this conversation and to listen to them,” he said. “We have done a lousy job in the environmental community of centering on these people.”

Ruffalo said as the mood of the world is for greater justice, we should start considering the rights of nature.
