TOWN OF NEWBURGH – A Poughkeepsie Middle School teacher who lives in the Town of Newburgh saved her 26-year-old neighbor’s life when he overdosed last week.

Julie Hayen recounted how she was home and received a call from her 18-year-old neighbor that her 26-year-old brother had overdosed. She rushed over, bringing her Narcan kit that she learned how to use at a superintendent’s conference, and administered two doses.

As she gave him the nasal applications, she told him what she was doing. At the same time, the sister had called 911 and the police and an ambulance arrived and took over.

Days after the incident, Hayen still cannot believe what happened.

“It’s surreal to know that you saved a person. I never saved a person. Life is so precious,” she said. “Almost three years ago I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, so I know firsthand how precious life is.”

Hayen’s health is much improved and she continues her more than 10-year teaching career in the Poughkeepsie City School District.
