POUGHKEEPSIE – In a webcast meeting of the Poughkeepsie Common Council on Monday night, all nine lawmakers voted to appoint resident Barrington Atkins to fill the District 10 Dutchess County Legislature vacancy left with the recent passing of longtime public servant Barbara Jeter-Jackson.

The Democrats on the council met over the weekend to choose their recommendation from the several residents who sought the appointment.

Atkins expressed his excitement and appreciation for the appointment, after praising his predecessor.

“Barbara Jeter-Jackson was a legend in Dutchess County!”  Atkins announced his intentions to work on issues affecting District 10 including affordable housing and investment in the county’s youth, saying “They are the future of tomorrow.”

Calling Atkins a “stand out,” Councilman Chris Petsas expressed his confidence in the newcomer’s ability to represent the north side of the city.  Lawmaker Evan Menist said Atkins has “a wonderful resume,” that will serve the city well.

Atkins has a master’s degree in social work from Howard University and serves as a social worker in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.

The common council is known for its inability to agree on many issues and Majority Leader Lorraine Johnson, in supporting Atkins said she was “glad that the council agreed on something.”
