ALBANY – In the wake of the latest incidents of police involved shootings, Governor Cuomo wants all departments in the state to redesign and reform their policies and procedures. He has given them until next April 1 to submit their plans.

Wallkill Town Police Chief Robert Hertman, who was involved with President Obama’s 21st century policing initiative some five years ago, said he adopted many of those concepts back then.

One includes online posting of every call made by the department to provide complete transparency.

“The goal is to show that this department does not have any patterns of harassment based on race or gender and we review that data as well as share with the public and if the public observes anything that they perceive as a concern, we would like to hear about it,” he said.

Hertman also has his officers involved in implicit bias training, prides his department in its diversity and has a community council for the last 15 years, which provides an opportunity for the public to be engaged with the department.
