LIBERTY – A handful of people spent private time at the Sullivan County Veterans’ Cemetery in Liberty and at the County Government Center in Monticello.

Debra Soto sat at her husband’s grave at the veterans’ cemetery, where she visits every day, including Memorial Day.

“He was my life; I was married to him for 31 years. Juts because they died doesn’t mean you forget them. Today is a special day, but every day we are alive, so I sit with him,” she said.

Demis Sheeley is the commander of VFW Post 9588. He stood at the Sullivan County Veterans’ Memorial in front of the County Government Center in Monticello.

Wearing a patriotic red, white and blue face covering, he said while commemoration of the day may have changed because of COVID-19, we must still honor those killed serving our country.

He said hopefully things will return to normal to honor those who have died.
