HUDSON VALLEY – There are no large parades with marching bands and veterans’ groups because of COVID-19, but instead, many areas are conducting drive-by salutes to those who lost their lives protecting the country.

Caravans of police cars, fire trucks and veterans on motorcycles are weaving throughout the region to honor the memories of those heroes.

Orange County Veterans Services Director Christian Farrell said regardless of how the day is marked, its meaning is the same.

“Take the time to pause. If you have a flag, make sure you hang it outside your home and just remember those men and women who have served our country and who never came home to enjoy the stuff that we enjoy this weekend and every other day of the year,” he said. “Just remember them, pause and take some time. If you have children, teach them what it is all about. Hopefully, next year we will do it the right way, the way we have been doing it the way we have in past years.”

Gatherings of no more than 10 people are now allowed, so some communities are holding small ceremonies marking the day. Others have prerecorded events and ceremonies that have been posted online.
