GOSHEN – Some 1,200 employees of Orange County Government will now be eligible for voluntary separation from the county in return for receiving a cash incentive.

The plan is meant to thin out the county workforce and save money during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lawmakers approved the plan on Thursday. Personnel Committee Chairman John Vero supported the move.

“We are in unprecedented times right now. This is one way to help the budget and cut expenses,” he said.

The legislators also approved a resolution creating a voluntary temporary layoff program for county employees. Those who participate would receive federal unemployment benefits.
