PHILMONT – A 56-year-old Philmont woman died in a house fire on Wednesday evening, May 10, State Police said.

The Philmont Fire Company, State, and Philmont Police responded to the fire on Main Street at around 7:10 p.m.

The investigation found three residents of the building were able to escape safely, but one resident, Jacquline Strobino, went back into the house for unknown reasons. She was later found dead by firefighters.

Police said a preliminary investigation suggests the cause of the fire was accidental in nature.

State Police fire investigators and the Columbia County Cause and Origin Team were on the scene.

The Philmont Fire Company was assisted by Livingston, Greenport, Churchtown, Claverack, Chatham and Hudson fire departments, and Greenport Rescue.

The investigation is continuing.
