NEWBURGH – City Councilman Omari Shakur displayed his apparent dislike of police again this past weekend with a number of Facebook posts where he went to locations where officers were conducting investigations and was critical of their actions.

In one video, he made accusations about police activity.

“In the middle of a coronavirus crisis this is what they are told to do, come in here and put guns to our kids instead of helping the people who need service and protection. So, this is what happens in your community when occupiers, people who don’t live in your community, this is what happens,” he said as he recorded police at a gas station.

Officer in charge Lt. Kevin Lahar, Monday released a statement saying Shakur’s “behavior and antics are reckless, irresponsible and juvenile.”

The police statement said Shakur “continues to provide false statements and inaccurate facts to our community.”

Lt. Lahar said the city police and law enforcement partners “will not allow Councilman Shakur to deter our focus or impede our lawful duties as we work towards reducing gun violence and improving the quality of life for our residents.”
