Domestic assault leads to rape charges

CHATHAM – A Claverack man has been charged with first-degree rape and assault after two alleged attacks last Thursday, May 14.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was called to a report of an assault in progress in a vehicle alongside County Route 28A in the Town of Kinderhook. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle along with the persons involved in the incident.

An investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as Jason Delamater, 24, had been assaulting a female in the car. It was at that time that the victim said she was also sexually assaulted by Delamater at a separate location prior to the incident in the car.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Branch joined the investigation and were able to identify a location in the Town of Chatham where the sexual assault is alleged to have occurred.

Delamater was interviewed at the sheriff’s office and subsequently made admissions regarding both assaults.

The victim was transported from County Route 28A by Valatie Rescue Square to St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany for treatment of injuries sustained during the assaults and was later released.

Delamater was charged with first-degree rape for the incident in the Town of Chatham and a misdemeanor of assault for the incident in Kinderhook.

He was arraigned and released after posting $1,500 bail.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the State Police and the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.
