Companies conduct large COVID-19 layoffs

HUDSON VALLEY – Five area businesses have announced the layoffs of a total of 1,400 employees because of COVID-19.

The largest reported to the state labor department is MGM Yonkers, doing business as Empire City Casino, which laid off 890 people due to the closing of the casino during New York Pause. The employees are represented by a number of unions including Operating Engineers, Teamsters, Council of Carpenters, Plumbers and Steamfitters, Communications of America, and Operating Engineers.

Crystal Run Healthcare announced the layoffs of 366 people because of COVID-19 effects. The employees, who are not represented by any unions, include those in a number of the business’ locations – Town of Wallkill, Town of Newburgh, Suffern, Liberty, West Nyack, New Windsor, Haverstraw, Stony Point, Rock Hill, Goshen, Warwick, and Monroe.

Sankara NY LLC, doing business as Castle Hotel and Spa in Tarrytown, reported 84 layoffs because of a temporary closing caused of COVID-19. The employees are not represented by a union.

YMCA of Greater New York Camp in Huguenot reported 62 temporary layoffs with one additional employee permanently separated. The workers are not represented by a union.

Altman Lighting, Inc. of Yonkers has separated 46 employees from the company that engaged in theatrical, architectural, film and video lighting. The business was closed and workers were furloughed with the business relocating to Colorado, according to a labor department filing.
