MID-HUDSON – The state has given the green light for several area counties to resume elective surgeries.

Hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers may now perform elective surgeries in the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan and Ulster counties.

Only Greene, Rockland and Westchester have not been given the nod by the state to resume those operations.

All elective surgeries statewide were canceled about six weeks ago to make room for COVID-19 patients who were placed on ventilators. In many cases, entire hospitals were converted to ICU units with ventilators for the seriously ill patients.

In recent days, the number of COVID-19 patients has declined in sufficient numbers for 47 counties to be able to reopen for elective surgeries.
