IRDONDEQUOIT – This Friday, May 15, marks the end of New York Pause, the shutdown of virtually the entire state in an effort to curb the coronavirus.

With that milestone in the fight against the virus just days away, Governor Cuomo, Monday, said each region should start to think about what to reopen, how and when.

Each region would have to meet the CDC guidelines for reopening.

Construction and manufacturing would likely be the first to go back on line.

The governor also announced that certain low-risk business and recreational activities will be ready to reopen statewide on May 15th, including landscaping and gardening; outdoor, low-risk recreational activities such as tennis; and drive-in movie theaters.

He emphasized that the reopenings must be calculated, slow and smart and if the numbers of new COVID-19 cases starts to tick up, the reopening would have to be scaled back. New York can learn from other countries, which reopened, but then had to scale back.

Cuomo said the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier and Mohawk Valley regions have met the seven metrics required to begin phase one of the reopening plan. The North Country and Central New York are close to meeting all metrics.
