The following is an essay from one of our “Student Journalists”, Shannon McRitchie.
PLEASANT VALLEY – My name is Shannon McRitchie, I’m an aspiring singer, am 17-years- old and I got to sing for Justin Bieber on his Instagram live!
Over this period of quarantine, I told myself I was going to be more productive. My mom kept telling me that if I continued to post more singing videos than usual at this time, someone is going to notice me. Mom’s logic was that every celebrity is on their phones and on the internet at this time, as we all are not allowed to leave our houses. Little did I know that this was actually going to happen.
I have looked up to Justin and he has been my idol since I was 7 years old. He has always been one of my biggest inspirations and he always will be. He is such an amazing artist and person, he genuinely has the biggest heart and cares so much about his fans. Never in a million years did I think I would ever get the chance to speak with him, let alone SING for him. So the fact that this even happened is insane.
Over this time of quarantine, Justin has been going live on his Instagram and guesting fans and taking his time to chat with them, which is very admirable. I had been watching for a week prior, each and every night crossing my fingers and hoping that Justin would pick me to go live with him. On the night of April 15, it finally happened. As I was watching his live session that night, I had an overwhelming feeling that he was going to pick me, but at the same time, I didn’t exactly expect it to actually happen. I kept on commenting until finally, he noticed, and I got the notification that Justin accepted my request to go live with him! I was absolutely over the moon and filled with excitement, but somehow I managed to keep my composure and remain calm so that I could have a nice conversation with him.
I initially told Justin that I have been a fan of his since I was 7 years old, and then he spotted my Michael Jackson (MJ) wall in my room and we began talking about MJ, and Justin was so intrigued and wanted to know why I love Michael so much. It was so cool because the way we were conversing made it seem like we had been friends forever. After this happened, I asked Justin right at the moment if I could sing for him and he said “Of course you can!” He really enjoyed my singing as I sang him a little bit of his song “10,000 hours”. He went on to say that I have the courage and he absolutely loved that I saw my shot and just went for it. The world-famous performer said to me “Those are the kinds of people who are going to make it.” Justin also said “I hope to see you at the top of the charts one of these days,” which is beyond amazing. Justin gave me many words of encouragement and what he said to me will stick with me forever. This is definitely something that I will never forget.
