State launches third round of HEAP benefits

LIBERTY – Due the COVID-19 pandemic, New York State has initiated a third round of HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) benefits, both Regular and Emergency, through June 30.

 The Emergency benefits, which can only be accessed after regular HEAP and initial Emergency HEAP benefits have been exhausted, will mirror the first round of Emergency HEAP:

 Eligibility criteria apply and can be found at www.otda.ny.gov/programs/heap

 “It is highly likely that past applicants who were working and thus ineligible for HEAP may now be eligible,” said Sullivan County District 2 Legislator Nadia Rajsz, chairwoman of the Legislature’s Health & Family Services Committee. “In addition, more people may be eligible to apply for the first time if they have encountered a loss in income.”

“Remember, however, that our Department of Family Services, which handles HEAP, is still limiting physical access to stop the spread of coronavirus,” she added, “so potential applicants should call 845-807-0142 before coming in to apply. 

 New applicants are able to get an application online and can apply through www.Mybenefits.gov.
