KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan is in support of the voluntary separation plan approved by the county legislature that is projected to save taxpayer dollars. Eligible county workers will be allowed leave their county employment early with an incentive to do so.

Speaking on a Zoom-cast with Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMann on Wednesday, the Ulster executive said he was not thrilled with the county comptroller’s idea of furloughing hundreds of workers for three months.

“To me that probably doesn’t feel like the right solution. We have to look at everything. The number one priority is keep critical services delivered in the midst of a crisis to the residents of the county. But, we have to balance that with a tax burden,” he said.

Ryan announced that the death toll from COVID-19 has reached 30 people.

He also revealed that the county has had to purchase personal protective equipment directly from China, something that has traditionally been a function of state and federal governments.
