WHITE PLAINS – Air traffic at Westchester County Airport is way down because of the coronavirus so county officials have decided to shut down the main runway for almost a month so that upgrade construction may take place.

Construction will begin on Monday, April 27 on the airport’s primary runway, as well as on a portion that connects both runways. The main runway, 16/34, will close for construction through May 21, and the intersection that connects both runways will be closed from April 29 through May 5.

The decision to close the runways for an extended period of time was made in an effort to reduce construction impact on flights activity when airport operations return to normal.

By completing construction and repaving during an airport closure, the need for the installation and removal of temporary runway pavement to continue daily airport operations will be eliminated, officials said.
