KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan has created a COVID-19 Tenant Protection Unit to assure tenants’ rights are protected.

Under Governor Cuomo’s “New York on Pause” order, commercial and residential evictions are prohibited for 90 days.

Ryan emphasized on Wednesday that the county has zero-tolerance for anyone taking advantage of residents in this time of crisis.

“We are basically enforcing the governor’s order for that 90-day period there are no evictions and then we are also looking for any other means that we can help ensure that our tenants and our residents have a safe, decent place to stay – food, shelter and basic safety; these are things we have to be able to provide as a government, especially during these types of crisis periods,” he said.

The new county tenant protection unit will be staffed by members of the county public defender’s office, which “stands ready to help any tenant in need of assistance during this crisis,” said Acting County Public Defender Clifford Owens.
