Car crashes into utility pole, passenger killed

SAUGERTIES – A passenger in a car was killed and the driver was injured with the vehicle crashed into a utility pole on Route 9W in the area of the Sunoco gas station in the Town of Saugerties.

The 1:22 a.m. crash on Wednesday, April 22 involved a 2000 Honda Accord that hit the pole on the east shoulder of the road.

Saugerties Police said the driver had to be extricated from the car and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center after being treated at the scene by paramedics from Diaz Ambulance. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of relatives.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.

Saugerties Police were assisted at the scene by the Glasco Fire Department, Diaz Ambulance, LifeNet Medivac, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and State Police.
