MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature last week cut $5.5 million from its budget in anticipation of lost revenue due to the “paused” economy as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Legislature Chairman Robert Doherty said the impact of lost sales tax could reach $9 million.

“Our three biggest sources of sales tax in the county are car sales, the goods to make home repairs, and gasoline,” he said. “Right now, no one is buying cars, no one is driving cars, no one is going to Home Depot right now. So, we won’t know the real number until after the first of May and so we were doing a precaution.”

The initial round of cuts included dozens of county workers placed on furlough.

The lawmakers left $193,700 in legislative discretionary funding in the budget. That money is used to pay for community projects, Doherty said.
