KINGSTON – The Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley in Kingston is virtually out of beds in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. There are now 125 beds in the hospital and Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan wants to reach 400.

The Mary’s Avenue campus of the hospital has approval to develop 235 more beds and Ryan would like to add 100 more step-down beds.

The issue is where to put them. Ryan plans on developing a temporary hospital at the former Bank of America building at Tech City in the Town of Ulster. That is an ideal location for the additional beds, Ryan said on Tuesday.

Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan made the announcement during a Facebook session with Kingston Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Padalino

“It is co-located right next to where we have one of our mobile testing sites, there is tons of space, there is good standoff, there is traffic control,” he said. “Some of problems, though, is we don’t have full infrastructure set up and it will take some time to build out. So in the meantime, for a few week period, we need basically a temporary field hospital site.”

And that, if needed, will be at the Kate Walton Fieldhouse on the Kingston High School campus, with the blessings of school district officials.

The Tech City facility is scheduled to be up and running in May, Ryan said.
