MAYBROOK – In the attempt to beat the coronavirus, health officials around the nation have been lobbying for everyone to practice social distancing – avoiding groups of people and standing or sitting no closer than six feet from another person.

Those precautionary measures have put the kibosh on parties and for kids who will not celebrate their birthdays with family and friends, area fire departments are stepping up to fill the void.

Maybrook, Montgomery and Walden departments among others, are marking birthdays for kids with surprise drive-by birthdays, said Maybrook Fire Chief Patrick Romanik.

“We understand that in times of crisis, with the pandemic going on, that children aren’t able to have their usual parties, so we took it upon ourselves to do the birthday drive-bys to uplift their spirits and put a smile on their faces,” he said.  “Pretty much what we are looking for is putting a smile on these kids’ faces when its a dim and gloomy time right now.”

Parents who may want to surprise their birthday boys and girls up to the age of 12 in the Montgomery area may call 845-741-2835.
