KINGSTON – The New York State Elections Commissioners’ Association is supporting the consolidation of the April presidential primary election with the June 23 congressional, state legislature and local primaries.

Ulster County Democratic Commissioner Ashley Dittus says it is imperative to combine them with no end in sight for the coronavirus.

“We are looking at some bills that will expand people’s ability to get absentee ballots if they are worried about contracting the virus or if they already, unfortunately, have contracted the virus or are taking care of somebody who does,” she said. “There are some bills that we expect will pass that will protect our absentee population, allowing people to go that way so they don’t have to go to the poll sites if it continues throughout the spring and into June, which most people expect that it will in some capacity.”

Dittus said acting on those bills will save counties resources while preserving the rights of voters and the safety and health of election workers.
