MONTICELLO – The first COVID-19 related death in Sullivan County was reported on Monday by county Public Health Director Nancy McGraw.

“The very unfortunate news is that we did find out about the first confirmed death of a resident in the county very recently and we want to send condolences to the family.”

Sheriff Michael Schiff said the summer camps that usually open in the weeks ahead will not be doing so this year because of the concern that the virus could be spread among attendees.

He did note there are people who own homes and come up from the metropolitan area during the summer.

“Those people pay taxes; they own the residences, and I have gotten some complaints from some people on that but in the same breath they are telling me they had a cousin or a nephew who came up from (New York) city to get them out of there. So, I would inwardly when you start looking out and saying this group or that group, think about how you conduct yourself and what you do for your family,” the sheriff said.

Over 500 people have been tested with only 106 testing positive, she said.

“The good news is that we have had 526 test negative to date and that is a total of 632 individuals being tested that we are aware of,” McGraw said.
