MONSEY – One of the five people attacked and wounded when a man burst into a Hanukkah celebration at a rabbi’s Monsey home on December 28, 2019, while armed with a machete, has died.

Josef Neumann,72, of Monsey, died Sunday at a Rockland County nursing home, said Yossi Gestetner, a spokesman for the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council of the Hudson Valley.

Grafton Thomas of Greenwood Lake has been charged with state and federal crimes of attempted murder in the case. His legal defense team maintains he is mentally unfit to stand trial, while prosecutors dispute that claim.

The funeral and burial for Neumann will be held today with Gestetner saying mourners will practice social distancing.
