UNION VALE – A Union Vale man was arrested on Thursday, March 19 following a domestic dispute that turned into an incident where the suspect barricaded himself inside a residence.

Leandro Castro, 50, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated harassment in the second degree, all as misdemeanors.

At about 6:35 p.m., State Police responded to North Clove Road in Union Vale for a report of a domestic dispute. The investigation determined that before police were contacted, Castro engaged in a physical domestic with a victim outside a residence in and around a vehicle. There were four children in the vehicle at the time of the altercation.

The victim fled the scene with the children and called 911. When police arrived, Castro barricaded himself inside the home, but after a short period of negotiations, State Police crisis negotiators were able to convince Castro to surrender. He was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.

He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance pending a future court appearance.

Assisting at the scene were the State Police Special Operations Response Team and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
