ALBANY – Hudson Valley unemployment in January was stable when compared with January 2019 figures, the state labor department reported.

The numbers are expected to soar going forward because of the coronavirus and the governor’s ordered mass closures of businesses.

In January, Rockland County had the lowest level of joblessness in the region at 3.7 percent compared with 3.8 percent the year before.

In Columbia County, unemployment in January was 3.8 percent, compared with 3.9 percent one year earlier.

In Dutchess County, January unemployment was 4.0 percent, the same as in January 2019. Westchester County’s joblessness was 4.0 percent, down from 4.1 percent a year earlier.

Putnam County unemployment rose slightly from 4.0 percent to 4.1 percent. Orange County remained flat at 4.1 percent.

In Ulster County, joblessness dropped from 4.4 percent in January 2019 to 4.2 percent this January.

Sullivan County remained flat at 4.7 percent and Greene County dipped from 5.2 percent to 5.1 percent.
