NEW WINDSOR – Former New Windsor Town Supervisor George Green passed away Monday morning. He was 76.

Green was New Windsor town supervisor before he moved on to the Orange County Legislature and years later, ran for supervisor again and held that post in recent year.

He lost the Republican primary to current Supervisor George Meyers last fall.

“I had a great working relationship with George and he was well-respected by his peers,” said Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus said. “George was a dedicated and hard-working man and took great pride in representing the residents of New Windsor. You always knew where you stood with George, which I always appreciated. He will be deeply missed and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

“George was a legend the likes of which we will never see again,” said State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt of New Windsor, who served as Green’s chief of staff in recent years. “He dedicated himself to his beloved New Windsor for more than half a century, whether it be as a police officer, county legislator or town supervisor. George loved our town and loved its people. He knew every part of the town like the back of his hand. His legacy and impact will stand the test of time. I will always appreciate his friendship,” said Schmitt.

Orange County GOP Chairwoman Courtney Canfield Green said George Green was “a true legend and mentor to many of us.”

Green had been suffering from respiratory issues for some time.
