POUGHKEEPSIE – On Thursday, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office made an unusual post on Facebook that drew quite a backlash of complaints. The post, authored by Detective Sergeant Stephen Reverri, who oversees the warrant squad, read as follows:
“Due to the National Pandemic, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend the opportunity for those with Family Court Warrants; for FAILURE TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT, to make good. The individuals listed below can contact (845) 486-3866 to obtain their up-to-date purge amount. Assistance paying and vacating the warrant will be provided.
If asked to leave a message, please leave your name and a good phone number to contact you. Someone will be sure to get back to you. Thank you and stay healthy.”
The post then listed all of the individuals that the sheriff’s office is looking for. Reverri told Mid-Hudson News that the sheriff’s office had made a number of unsuccessful attempts to have the individuals satisfy the arrears owed.
“A warrant issued by Family Court is not a matter that happens overnight. There are numerous hearings and attempts to get all parties involved in a reasonable disposition set forth by all evidence heard by the duly elected Family Court Justices to invoke a condition of child support,” Sergeant Reverri said.
At the exhaustion of all other efforts to collect child support, the court will issue a warrant and/or an order of commitment. These writs will state a purge amount to satisfy a fee and/or partial support set forth by court. If the purge amount is met, the warrants are typically vacated. If they are not, and the subject has police contact; the subject is arrested and remanded to jail for a predetermined time set forth by the judge.
It is the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office attempt to satisfy these warrants by locating these subjects and assisting them in the process; thus ultimately assisting their children by keeping them out of jail while they make monetary amends.” Reverri also said, “I will add that numerous attempts have been made to contact all subjects with outstanding Family Court Warrants to no avail. This was not the first, nor the fifth, attempt to assist these subjects to rectify the issues they face in Family Court. Simply, the mission of this is to keep the subjects out of jail in a further attempt to allow them to pay their ordered child support.” Reverri stressed that the post was an attempt to help people in arrears address the situation and avoid being taken into custody.
