KINGSTON – Mayor Steven Noble is asking landlords in Kingston to “have flexibility with (their) tenants during this difficult time.”

The mayor’s request for landlords to freeze rent increases comes as the coronavirus spreads across the region with new cases being reported daily.

With the governor’s mandated shutdown of many businesses in an effort to slow down the person-to-person spread of the virus, those impacted people are feeling a major financial strain. “Many Kingstonians are having their livelihoods disrupted by this crisis, so I call on (landlords’) assistance to help our fellow community members as they may have difficulty paying rent,” Noble said. “I hope you will consider delaying rent payments for those negatively impacted,” he said to the landlords.

Noble also noted the governor announced that mortgage payments can be delayed for up to 90 days based on financial hardship. “This means that landlords who have a mortgage will be able to pass that financial support to their tenants who are out of work,” he said.
