MIDDLETOWN – Areas of the City of Middletown have been plagued with feral cat colonies and a group of volunteers has been trapping and having them neutered and spayed before releasing them.

Now the city is teaming up with the volunteers to develop a cat sanctuary, said Mayor Joseph DeStefano.

“They built a little colony in an undisclosed location owned by the city where they will maintain it, feed them, make sure they got the proper shots and make sure they are spayed and neutered,” he said.

The location is not being made public because they don’t want people to drop off cats just to get rid of them, DeStefano said.

The common council has appropriated $5,000 toward development of the colony.
