GOSHEN – Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois and Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff did not mince words in blaming State Senator Jennifer Metzger (D, Rosendale) for what they said is her “shameful, dangerous record,” particularly as it related to the “catch and release” bail reform. They made their appeal in a video ad that is running on social media.

The two men, both Republicans, are supporting Metzger’s opponent in the fall election, Michael Martucci of Goshen.

“I vow to protect our families,” said Martucci on Thursday. “Jen Metzger’s dangerous tactics are proof of how she has walked out on our community.”

Schiff said Metzger’s “no-bail law endangers our families. Criminal charges like dealing heroin, assaulting a child and burglary… Jen Metzger puts these people right back out on the street.”

DuBois said with Metzger in the State Senate, it has made “our communities less safe. Imagine if someone is charged with bringing a gun onto school grounds. Jen Metzger voted to release that person. She is in lockstep with New York City’s liberal agenda.”

Metzger responded to the criticism, saying she is “focused on the health and safety or our communities.” She said lawmakers just passed a bipartisan bill to direct $40 million to address the coronavirus outbreak with more work to be done. “Working together and keeping people informed is vital – why anyone would choose this time to launch a distracting and shameless political attack is beyond me,” she said.

The two candidates will be vying for the 42nd State Senate District seat. The district encompasses all of Sullivan County as well as portions of Ulster, Orange and Delaware counties.
