Second case of COVID-19 confirmed in Ulster County

KINGSTON – A second case of an individual with coronavirus has been confirmed and Ulster County officials are doubling down on their advisories to the public to take all precautions.

This latest case stems from the hamlet of Wallkill, Superintendent of Schools Kevin Castle said Wednesday than an employee of a district contactor as well as a district student have been in close contact with an individual diagnosed with COVID-19.

County Executive Patrick Ryan said when the man , a resident of Shawangunk, suspected he had been infected, he traveled to a Town of Wallkill healthcare facility.

“At this time we do know the individual traveled to Crystal Run Healthcare to get the actual test,” Ryan said. “Our arbitrary county borders are not honored by these sorts of things so we have been coordinating with state leaders and our neighboring counties.”

In consultation with the county health department, all of the Wallkill district’s school buildings will be closed Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13. All extracurricular activities and evening programs are canceled for today (Wednesday), Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

During the time the buildings will be off limits, they will be thoroughly disinfected and local health officials will further investigate the case.

Officials renewed their recommended steps for individuals to minimize and contain potential exposures, including washing hands with soap and water frequently, avoiding touching surfaces in public spaces, avoid touching your eyes and mouth, cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue or sleeve, stay home if sick, get a flu shot if you haven’t already, and help to keep your immune system strong be getting enough sleep and reduced stress.

Coronavirus symptoms can include fever, cough, fatigue, trouble breathing and pneumonia.
