Jersey man in stolen car arrested on Thruway

TUXEDO – A 33-year-old Paterson, New Jersey man is under arrest in the Orange County Jail following a car chase by State Police on the Thruway in Tuxedo just after 10 a.m. n Thursday, March 5.

Troopers received a report of a vehicle pursuit entering New York from New Jersey involving a stolen car.

Officers attempted to stop the car on the Thruway in Tuxedo. The car, driven by John Johnson, struck a guide rail, sustaining heavy damage, but continued for a short distance before driving off the road. A brief foot pursuit ensued before Johnson was taken into custody.

It was determined he was impaired by drugs and while in custody required the use of Narcan. He was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh for overdose symptom, non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash, and a mental health evaluation.

He was later charged with assault with intend to cause injury to a police officer, criminal possession of stolen property, both felonies, as well as misdemeanors of reckless endangerment, driving while ability impaired by drugs, unlawful fleeing a police officer and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

He was remanded to the Orange County Jail pending extradition to New Jersey.
