NEWBURGH – The fire in the rectory of Calvary Presbyterian Church on South Street in Newburgh early Thursday morning caused extensive damage to the first floor, said City Fire Chief William Horton.

He said it is believed the fire started on the stage in the 2,000-square foot room, but the cause is unknown at this time. The fire burned virtually everything in it, he said.

Fire investigators from Newburgh and the state are looking for the cause.

Horton said firefighters were successful in preventing the flames from reaching the sanctuary.

There no injuries to firefighters.

Newburgh personnel were joined by others from neighboring departments.
