MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature has named County Court Judge Michael McGuire as the new county attorney.

It had been rumored for weeks that McGuire was going to step down from the bench.

There was one dissenting vote and that came from Legislator Ira Steingart, who noted he could have taken “the easy way out” and vote for McGuire since their sons are friends.

“We have four candidates and I thought that all four of them have the ability to do the job. But I feel that (Deputy County Attorney) Tom (Cawley) has been here for decades and has done a wonderful and think it is important to promote from within the county if someone has the skillset to do it,” Steingart said.

The legislature is replacing current County Attorney Cheryl McCausland who will leave that post in mid-April.
