Council chair charged with DWI following accident

POUGHKEEPSIE – Sarah Salem, the 35-year-old chairperson of the Poughkeepsie Common Council has been arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated after a Wednesday night accident on Main Street.

Salem was operating a Chevy Volt westbound on Main Street in the vicinity of Grand Rehabilitation when the councilperson allegedly ran a red light and struck another vehicle.  Personnel from Poughkeepsie police and fire departments responded to the scene to investigate the accident and treat potential injured occupants.  No medical treatment was required by the involved parties.

An investigation by police resulted in Salem being arrested and taken into custody for the DWI charge.

Repeated calls and texts to Salem were not returned.  Mid-Hudson News also made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the vice-chair of the common council, Sarah Brannen.
