TOWN OF WALLKILL – The State Department of Environmental Conservation will conduct a public session on March 12 to discuss its plans to address contamination related to the Revere Smelting and Refining site’s operable unit three in the Town of Wallkill.

The site is listed as a class-two site on the State Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites. A class-two site represents a significant threat to public health or the environment with action required.

The DEC, in consultation with the state health department, has proposed excavation of sediment from the Phillipsburg Creek corridor that exceed ecologically-based sediment guidance values and soil cleanup objectives; transporting that excavated soil to be treated to non-hazardous levels and placed in a containment cell; importing clean material for backfill; implementing a health and safety plan; and restoring the stream bed bathymetry and topography with appropriate in-kind streambed material.

RSR, on Ballard Road, operates a secondary lead smelter at the site. Remedial action has been completed for the on-site area to address contaminated soil and sediment adjacent to the active facility.
