Fire Destroys multi-use building in Wappingers Falls

WAPPINGERS FALLS – Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Wappingers Falls Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on the second floor of 10 Market Street in the village.  The building is occupied by Mario’s Sandwich Company on the first floor and has apartments on the second and third floors.

The blaze went to multiple alarms, bringing manpower and equipment from Rombout, Fishkill, East Fishkill, New Hamburg, New Hackensack, and Hughsonville fire departments to the scene.

Smoke is billowing from the windows as firefighters battle the 2-alarm fire.

Arlington firefighters have been designated to cover any calls in the New Hamburg district.  City of Poughkeepsie firefighters were dispatched to the scene with Tower Ladder 2 to fight the blaze from the back of the building.

Officials say that the fire started on the second floor and spread behind the walls of the structure.  The building has sustained severe fire, smoke, and water damage.  Frank Camey, owner of Mario’s Sandwich Shop said “Our business was affected by the blaze today. We will rebuild and we will be back! Thank you for your support.”

Members of the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division were summoned to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
