Fire rips through multi-use building in Wappingers Falls

Smoke is billowing from 10 Market Street.

WAPPINGERS FALLS – Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Wappingers Falls Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on the second floor of 10 Market Street in the village.  The building is occupied by Mario’s Sandwich Company on the first floor and has apartments on the second and third floors.

The blaze has gone to a third alarm, bringing manpower and equipment from Rombout, Fishkill, East Fishkill, New Hamburg, New Hackensack, and Hughsonville fire departments to the scene.  Arlington firefighters have been designated to cover any calls in the New Hamburg district.

Smoke can be seen rising up from the back of 10 Market Street.

Officials say that the fire started on the second floor and spread behind the walls of the structure.  The building has sustained severe fire, smoke, and water damage.

Members of the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division have been summoned to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
