POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Democrat Deputy Elections Commissioner Elisa Sumner was terminated Monday, sources tell Mid-Hudson News.

Sumner, who is also the chairwoman of the Dutchess County Democratic Committee, served as deputy to Beth Soto, the Democratic elections commissioner.  The position is an “at-will” job in which Soto has the right to terminate the deputy at her discretion.

Mid-Hudson News has learned that on Friday, February 21, Sumner sent an email to Commissioner Soto announcing her intention to retire from her position effective April 30th of this year.

When reached, Commissioner Soto said, “I do not speak about personnel matters.”

Sources say that Sumner has been planning to retire and move to Florida later this year.  Information received is that when Sumner arrived at work Monday morning, Commissioner Soto demanded that she turn in her keys to the office and her county ID card.

Sumner has not returned calls seeking comment.  The Democratic Minority Leader of the county legislature, Rebecca Edwards, responded to the dismissal saying “I’m aware that on Friday, Elisa submitted her letter of retirement from the BOE, effective April 30.  Any further developments are news to me; if this is true it’s most dispiriting. I look forward to continuing to work with Elisa in her capacity as county Democratic chair.”
