DOVER – More than two dozen cats were rescued at or near a trailer in Dover that had been abandoned by the property owner.

When agents from the Dutchess County SPCA entered the trailer on Friday, February 14, they found it filled floor to ceiling with trash, urine, and feces. There was no heat, no water, and no food for the animals.

The investigation is continuing and authorities estimate about 25 cats live on or inside the property. SPCA employees are still trapping cats in the residence finding the felines in various stages of dehydration and emaciation, with fleas, infections, leg and head injuries and ulcerated wounds.

“This is a very sad situation where the individual involved was clearly unable to care for these animals and they have suffered terribly,” said SPCA Executive Director Lynne Meloccaro. “We are committed to getting them healthy and finding them the loving homes they deserve.”

In the meantime, the SPCA is asking for community support for the medical care of the animals.

The Humane Law department is pursuing the case.
