MIDDLETOWN – Now that the City of Middletown has secured the 15-acre former START Center for its Parks and Recreation headquarters and facilities, some upgrades most be undertaken at a cost of $400,000.

They won’t cost the city a penny as Senator Jennifer Metzger has secured the state funding to cover the costs of the work. Mayor Joseph DeStefano said the money will be put to good use.

“We can upgrade roofing, we can upgrade HVAC systems and do whatever work is necessary on the property to be able to convert it from this former youth detention facility to an active recreation campus for people of all ages,” he said. “There is a gymnasium; there is a 14,000 square foot office building. There are secondary buildings on the property.”

Metzger said Middletown “is making enormous strides in enhancing public access to trails, athletic fields, and green spaces, and I am thrilled to support this effort.”
