POUGHKEEPSIE – A fire in a single-family residence at 85 Gate Street in the City of Poughkeepsie has displaced the owner and caused substantial damage to the two-story home.
Poughkeepsie firefighters were dispatched to the fire around 3:30 p.m. Upon arrival, the fire was confirmed, bringing Arlington and Fairview firefighters to the scene to assist Poughkeepsie’s crew.
The fire was knocked down quickly and within 25 minutes it was declared extinguished. Firefighters pulled the ceiling and wall panels down to make sure that the fire had not extended further into the structure.
Deputy Fire Chief Joe Franco said that the fire appears to have originated on the second floor of the dwelling, but indicated that the actual cause and origin would not be determined until fire investigators performed a thorough examination.
Medics from Mobile Life Support Services joined the three fire departments at the scene. City building inspectors were also present along with employees of Central Hudson Gas & Electric.
While operating at the fire, another fire alarm in the city brought first responders from the Highland and Roosevelt fire departments. That alarm was triggered by workers in the building and no additional action was needed by the responding departments.
