PORT JERVIS – Orange County is asking the state for permission to raise its sales tax by one-quarter percent.
Aside from the additional funds the county will receive, its municipalities will see more money through the sales tax sharing program with the county.
Port Jervis Mayor Kelly Decker said the extra funds will mean less borrowing to make upgrades in the city. “That quarter-percent is nothing out of the ordinary for anyplace else. The advantage to us is that we can make more improvements because of the added sales tax revenue,” he said.
If the state approves the increase, it is estimated to translate into an additional $250,000 a year for Port Jervis.
