MONTGOMERY – By a five to two vote, the Montgomery Town Industrial Development Agency has approved the 15-year amended payment-in-lieu of taxes agreement with Amazon so the giant online merchandising company will construct a one million square foot distribution center in the town.

Site clearing, at the intersection of Routes 747 and 17K is expected to begin shortly.

Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus was thrilled with Friday’s approval.

“I’m looking forward to the number of jobs coming to Orange County as well as the impact it will have on Stewart International Airport,” he said.

“This is another monumental victory for Orange County, the Town of Montgomery and the Hudson Valley,” said Maureen Halahan, president of the Orange County Partnership.

The project will involve a $75 million capital investment, create as many as 1,000 jobs, and 300 construction jobs over an 18-month period.

The IDA board, Friday, approved a PILOT agreement that was different from the one originally proposed. “There was a modification where the developer agreed to pay extra 20 percent during the first five years when the policy allows zero PILOT payment,” said Jeff Crist, chairman of the Montgomery IDA.
