Driver killed when car crashes into tree, bursts into flames

CORNWALL – The driver of a car traveling on Route 9W southbound near the overlook in the Town of Cornwall early Wednesday morning was killed when their vehicle ran off the road, struck a tree and burst into flames.

The accident occurred around 12:38 a.m. and when officers arrived on the scene, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, Cornwall Town Police Chief Todd Hazard said.

The fire was extinguished by the Cornwall Fire Department and the single occupant was found dead in the driver’s seat.

The chief said preliminary investigation shows the car went off the road, crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The name of the victim was withheld pending notification of relatives.
